William steeled himself to let her go. He was torn between an impulse not to go after her and prolong their goodbye, and another to offer her some sort of support and comfort. The latter impulse was the stronger, but it was the first that won out.

When he’d left Oxford and then Cranford behind and gone to India, apart from his mother and Charles and Tilly, he had not believed in the inherent goodness of anyone, until he’d met Johnathan—and then Anna. He could still hear her musical laughter. With her he had relaxed his guard and allowed her to come closer than he’d intended.

He would take the golden memories of Anna with him, the sound of her voice, the taste of her lips and the way she had looked when she stood on the deck of the Bengal, looking out to sea with a faraway look in her eyes and her hair flowing behind her like a pennant. He would keep her image in the deepest recesses of his memory—like a box that would remain closed for ever.

And so with the skill he’d perfected when he had left England and his birthright behind, already restrained, guarded and world-weary, he calmly dismissed Anna from his mind—at least this was what he tried to do, but it was no simple matter. Why, he asked himself, did she occupy his thoughts? Why could he not break the hold she had over him?
